  Replacement Tips

Choose a superior brand.
Off brands or low end brands may be less expensive, however they are often built with inferior parts and materials.  They almost always have inferior warranties.

Buy the highest efficiency equipment you can afford.
With energy prices steadily increasing
choosing high efficiency equipment will save you money in the long run.

Avoid reliance on fossil fuel systems.
Oil and propane can provide great sources of heat.  However, they can be volatile in terms of cost.  A smart option is to install air source heat pumps that can work with your fossil fuel heating system.

Correct sizing is critical.
Over sizing equipment can cause short cycling which can damage compressors and cause extra wear and tear.  It also limits the equipments ability ability to dehumidify in the summer.  If equipment is undersized it will not be able to heat or cool a home properly.  The only way to determine correct sizing is to do a heat load calculation.

Compare "apples to apples."
Be sure to get quotes that reflect the same equipment options.  Ask for model numbers and efficiency ratings (SEER rating).  Higher efficiency equipment will cost more up front but, if properly installed, will save you money over time.

If possible, always choose quality over price.
Everyone knows the old adage "you get what you pay for."  At the same time you want the best value for your money.  That only makes sense.  Very rarely will the lowest price deliver quality, dependability and good customer service.  Companies that charge more are often the most reputable, have the best employees, stand behind their work and do what they promise.

Check references
Reputable companies that consistently meet or exceed the expectations of their customers should have no problem providing excellent references from satisfied clients.  It is a terrible feeling to pay thousands of dollars to have a system installed only to find that the workmanship was poor or the system was installed incorrectly.  Even worse is to have chronic problems with the system due to poor installation design and technique.  The best way to avoid this scenario is to do your homework on the company you are selecting.  How long have they been in business?  Are they a quality company that provides the highest end products, equipment and services?  Are they the low bidder?  Why do they charge less?   What do current customers say?

Check to make sure the company is licensed and insured
You should never contract with a company or an individual that is not licensed and insured.  You are putting yourself and your home at risk if you do.

Consider air quality and energy saving options
lt is almost always less expensive to install these extra items at the time of the system installation.  These products can be valuable additions to a whole-house comfort approach providing significant health benefits.  Products such as air cleaners can help protect and keep your equipment clean increasing system efficiency and longevity.  Programmable thermostats can reduce energy costs and provide convenience.

Ask about the condition of your duct system
The duct system that supplies air to your home is just as important to an effective home comfort system as your equipment.  Poorly designed or leaky duct systems can cause significant energy loss and less than optimal air distribution.  Sometimes, due to duct location, nothing can be done.  However, in some cases, repairs can be made that could significantly improve or enhance your systems effectiveness.

Ask if zoning is an option for your home
Does your home have a significant temperature difference between the first and second floors.  This is often caused by having only one system in a two level home.  By installing automatic dampers in your ductwork you may be able to achieve control over the temperature on both levels.

Only install variable speed blowers
A variable speed blower motor is simply a motor that can adjust speeds automatically during the course of its operation.  Variable speed motors save energy, are very quiet, can enhance air flow and comfort and are required when choosing the highest efficiency systems.

Proper system start-up is vital
Without proper start-up your new system could be operating at half of its efficiency.
It could also be operating below capacity.  There are certain procedures that need to be performed in order to insure that your system will operate effectively and to its peak efficiency.  Ask your professional to explain why pulling a vacuum, performing a leak test and checking refrigeration pressures according to super heat and sub cooling are important.  They should be able to answer these questions.
